Wether it be her captivating paintings and photos or her own presence on the opposite side of the lens, any aspect involving Brielle Jolie only needs one word: vibrancy. Despite being one of my few guests I’ve never met personally, Jolie leaves quite the impact. Though social media can have its repetitive aspects, there’s some creatives I have to keep up with. And Jolie’s is one of them. Each project she shares on her platforms showcases a woman who moves to the sound of her drum and looks ethereal while doing it. Jolie possesses a multitude of talents and charisma sure to take her wherever her heart desires. She maintains her elegance with all smiles on the other side of a zoom call with me during our meeting below:
S: What is your name?
B: My name is Brielle Jolie.
S: Where are you from?
B: I'm from Columbus, Ohio.

S: What is your sign?
B: Capricorn.
S: What traits do you feel you display best from that sign?
B: I would say compassion, creativity, and most of all loyal.
S: How old are you?

B: I'm 21.
S: Who is your personal favorite artist?
B: Mickalene Thomas, I love her work!
S: What is your preferred art medium?

B: I'm a mixed media artist, so I create with a lot of different things--but I'll say oil paint for sure.
S: When did you begin painting?
B: I was definitely young, the closest I could pinpoint my love for art in general is around seven years old. At this time I was just drawing, painting came into the picture shortly after.
S: Where do you look for inspiration?

B: A lot of the inspiration in my paintings stems from the community I grew up in. Wether it be Black culture, fashion sense, and even education.
S: What does a week in your life look like?
B: Since I'm a third year student at CCAD (Columbus College of Art and Design) my weeks usually consist of classes. Afterwards, I’m usually home with my siblings. I have a lot of them!

S: What has been your most difficult art piece to being to life?
B: All of my pieces have different realms I go through to make them. Wether that be coping with old childhood experiences, relationship aspects, or growing through the times now. They all have a level of difficulty in their unique ways.
S: When did you know you were made to be an artist?
B: Ever since I was a kid honestly. I’d go on and on to my mom saying “I’m going to be an artist!” or “I’m going to own my own galleries!” *laughs* I’ve been pretty determined to what’s in me.

S: How do you cope with hardships?
B: Definitely painting first! But if not that, I’ll use poetry as my outlet. I’m not one to share my feelings with other people, so writing a poem—if the feelings call for it—really helps me.
S: What has been your proudest moment in your art career?
B: There‘s been two for me, actually. Awhile back I was contacted by a member of the Euphoria cast [Sydney Sweeney] to buy a painting which was crazy exciting, I didn’t know people that big were paying attention to me. But on a personal level, I was really proud to make a video while going back to my old schools to talk to the students about artistic opportunities—it felt like a full circle moment.
S: What is your art ambiance like while you work?

B: I like to be alone *laughs* I don’t like to share my space at all! I’ll usually have music or a show in the background also. I take the time to lay everything out, it gets pretty messy with glitters and fabrics and everything in between. The most essential part is my isolation.
S: Is there anyone you dream of making commissioned work for?

B: Honestly anyone influential, most likely a woman. But none in particular.
S: How would you describe your art style in 3 words?
B: Honest, vibrant, and cultural.
S: Would you ever branch out into other creative realms?
B: I’d definitely like to dive deeper into film, I’ve been exploring it a bit now. I’d also like to do some interactive art that applies to a viewer's senses: touch, taste, smells—more that just sight.

S: How has art shaped you as a person?
B: In every way literally! It gave me a space to have control and become a stronger person. I have the level of confidence I do now because of art, it’s an exhilarating feeling to know that I can bring something to life with just pencil and paper. Art is my safe haven.
S: As a model, have you ever imagined a dream shoot for yourself? If so what would it look like?
B: Something in a big open studio where I bring all of my art into it. I’d like to be painting a piece in the process as well, likely topless in someway to showcase my minimalistic feelings towards art. I’m a way, I want to show that only the art matters—no extra is needed.
S: What are you looking forward to in your art career?

B: I feel like it’s time to start pushing to a larger audience wether that be New York, Miami, LA.
S: What does the creative process look like for you as far as erring aside time to work? Do you work at planned times or do you prefer inspiration to find you?
B: I‘m always saying “I’m going to plan!” But in reality I am not a planner at all. *laughs* My approach works best in the moment.
S: Who is your biggest inspiration in terms of modeling?

B: Gigi Hadid.
S: Are there any brands or photographers that you aim to work with in your modeling career?
B: As a kid I always thought I made it if I was in a Victoria Secret show! *laughs* That would still be amazing, but as the years have gone by and Black artists are getting platforms just as big, I feel a SavagexFenty show would satisfy me much more.

S: Who or what keeps you motivated?
B: Myself, because a lot of these pieces are experiences I don’t share with anyone. My mother also, she’s always been the biggest supporter of all of my dreams. From modeling, to art she was always next to me driving me forward.
S: Finally, if the world were yours for a month what would it look like?
