One of the best parts of the summer season is that the golden rule of fashion–and in life–can be easily followed: Less is More. But when it’s time to feel sexy in 90 degree heat, tank tops and shorts can often miss the mark--which is when we turn to dresses. More specifically, the ones with cutouts, the ones that are sheer, and the ones that are the most breathable. In these cases, dresses are valued more as a piece of art rather than a constricting piece of fabric, thus heightening the appeal for the modern woman. Perfect for layering, baring all, and everything in between, a dress that’s barely there can be perfect for everyone. Consider adding one of these fun pieces to your own closet before the season ends.

I.AM.GIA Gemma Dress
From the stretch, to the traditional lace, to the floor length hem–this dress feels classic. Also available in black, Gemma’s range is endless: perfect for a dim lit dinner paired with a scarf and colored jewelry to achieve an effortless fairytale look or running errands paired with an oversized leather jacket and the flattest sneakers you rely on at the moment. Mold-ability makes the I.AM.GIA Gemma dress a staple that can be worn again and again.

Maisie Wilen Perforated Dress
While better known for their matching pants sets seen on everyone from Latto to the Jenners in 2021, Wilen’s namesake brand has one of the most underrated barely-there dresses. Available in both maxi and mini style options ranging in four colors, it’s nearly impossible not to find the one to compliment your wardrobe. The extreme one-size-fits-all stretch and bright hues reminiscent of Justice that monopolized the childhood’s of Gen Z girls makes this the perfect choice for those who like a more sporty and carefree way to lean into the barely there look.

Poster Girl Oyster Jumpsuit
Although this strays away from dresses, Poster Girl made their stamp on the fashion industry in the past two years as the go-to independent fashion house for barely-there pieces, including dresses, that don't make you compromise comfortability. Since their launch in 2017, the two-woman brand has stretched far beyond the first sexy shapewear pieces that gained everyone’s attention. The Oyster jumpsuit from their latest collection–first teased on City Girl’s own JT–further solidifies the statement that Poster Girl is here to stay. The brand’s signature cutouts in the curviest places are the magic to their one size suits that flatter just about anyone. However, the subtle neutrals and full length design of the Oyster makes it the perfect option for versatility of both concealing and baring the skin. The endless styling options makes this the perfect addition for those who love to live in their essentials.

Louhaicy Official Belle Set
Like the Oyster jumpsuit, this three piece set is not technically a dress, but passes fairly well if all three pieces are paired together. However, it is the separation of this look that earns a top spot on my radar: want a barely there top? Awesome. A barely there skirt? You’ve got it. A barely there…belt? Well that’s there too, all under $200 handmade in four colors. The Belle set will last for summers to come with countless looks to pull off.

Vaillant Blue Minidress
The brand famous for their unique take on lace and mesh that would fit perfectly in the closet of Carrie Bradshaw takes a simple approach to this printed mini. When paired with a basic white button-up stolen from a dad or boyfriend’s closet and a simple pair of thong mules, this dress is one of the few on the list suitable for daywear with ease. However, for an eventful Saturday, a pair of lace up heels and a dark necklace to match could make for the perfect transition from day to night without much change needed. With a 75% markdown from its original $435 price tag exclusively on SSENSE, there’s barely any reason to not become a lady in blue this summer and all seasons to follow.

Nodress Black and Pink Nylon Mini
This piece by Nodress is easily one of my favorites. The mesh and trim play falling against the perfect places on the female anatomy makes for an incredibly flattering moment. The choice of bubblegum pink hints adds playful character to compliment the sexiness of a little black cutout dress. Needless to say, this dress is the moment all on its own so accessorizing can remain minimal. However, styling with dark hair to compliment the dress is sure to put this look at maximum appeal.
